People who are relying on a daily wage have been the ones who are most affected by the current public health crisis. Many employers can no longer continue to pay their employees, thus, they are resorting to retrenchment which mainly affects their employees.
In Kenya where many workers rely on their daily wages to survive, the lockdowns imposed by the government due to the pandemic have left them with limited to no resources for survival. The pandemic has made a massive negative impact on the lives of ordinary people in the country and has resulted in a hunger crisis in some areas.
Beatrice, who is working as a domestic worker and a single mother of four kids, said she was able to provide three meals a day for her family before the pandemic hit their town. However, since the start of the pandemic, many of her employers canceled her service which led her to lose her entire weekly income.
Beatrice is one of the millions of women around the world who have been directly affected by the global health crisis. Women Rights Canada Volunteers, together with other humanitarian organizations and foundations, have been collectively making efforts to raise funds and provide support for those who are struggling to make ends meet in this difficult time.
